City of Varna
The city of Varna is the heir of an ancient Thracian settlement, which later became a popular recreational site for Roman and Byzantine aristocracy. The Thermae – Roman public baths – date back to the Roman Empire. The building is situated on an area of 7,000 sq. m and was part of the Roman town of Odessos. The abundance of fragments, columns and capitals remind a visitor of the ornate decorations, which adored them at one time.
The Varna Archeological Musem is located in the building of the former Girls’ School and has one of the richest exhibits in the country. It hosts the Gold Treasure excavated from the Varna Necropolis in 1972. The Gold Treasure from the Varna Necropolis, dating from the late 5th millennium BC, is the oldest processed gold ever discovered anywhere in the world.
The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is the symbol of Varna and it was built in 1886. It is located in the city center. To appreciate the full beauty of the building it is best viewed after sunset. It is at this time of the day when spectacular lightning drenches the facade in magnificent hues.
